Research is the methodical process of collecting and analysing information to improve our knowledge of understanding of a specific study. There are eight main functions of research, these include; to highlight gaps in provision, inform policy or practice, extend knowledge and understanding, improve practice, allows progress to be monitored, plan provision, examine topics and aid reflection. Research is a careful and detailed study into a specific problem, concern, or issue and allows researchers to maintain an understanding and prove a specific point.

This can then make the research unreliable as the results will not be accurate which will make the research lack in validity because some of the information is not all valid. This is so that the social workers are kept up to date with any new policies and are aware of new rules and any change that might be made. By reading over policies and procedures will enable them to widen their knowledge and not forget the codes of practice as there are many to follow. This prevents ethical issues from arising as the professionals are kept up to date with everything which prevents mistake and
