Barbara Walraff comments, “copyeditors spend most of their day, every day polishing, so they can do this work more efficiently than just about anybody else, and they can always do it in a way that is appropriate to the publication. I think the most important thing copyeditors do is straighten out tangled, confusing, ungrammatical sentences.” It takes a special type of person to love punctuation and grammar and spelling, and not everyone is cut out for the job. Copyediting simply is not a temp job. Long hours, low pay, and high stress are not adjectives many picture when fantasizing about their dream professions.…

My level of concern about privacy when it comes to my location and whereabouts would rank as a 7 for me on a scale of 1 to 10. I am uncomfortable with my location being tracked, but I do not think that the people with access to it would use it maliciously. I assume that the people who could possibly have access to this information would be my cell service provider and the makers of apps on my phone. I think that apps should be allowed to use this information if it provides for a better experience, such as using google maps to get accurate directions. However, I would like to block most apps and my service provider from accessing my location.…

In response to a spike in juvenile crime rates during the transition into the Civil Rights era, states enacted tough punitive transfer laws that made it easier to automatically transfer juveniles to the adult criminal justice system, trying and sentencing adolescents as adults. Automatic transfer laws exempt certain crimes from being processed through the juvenile justice system by addressing the issue of juvenile delinquency based on irrational fears of a juvenile superpredator. Over the last several decades, the media portrayed the juvenile superpredator as gangs of urban thugs responsible for the majority of gun-related homicides and drug-related crimes nationwide. For example, nighty news would often report on bands of inner city adolescents as: fatherless, soulless, without conscience, beyond redemption, spiritually poor and were wilding their way through the streets committing all manner of horrific crimes [citation].…

This article examines Canadian Copyright Law as it was in 1996 and how it pertained to educators and school practices. The study questions some of the defences of infringement committed by educators and highlights that many are aware that they are infringing on copyright law but believe that their educational stance and position as an educator protects them from legal action. Walker clearly identifies that many educators in his study were aware of copyright legislation but remained passive about their obligations, consequently forgoing any notions of ‘fair dealing’ to ensure that students received as much knowledge as quickly as possible. He highlights that financial pressures and time are issues facing educators.…

Copyright has been a controversial topic since the day it was created. It’s intentionally written for protecting intelligent properties, yet turns out causing a lot of pernicious side effects. In the editorial “In Defense of Piracy” of Lawrence Lessig, he criticized that the “copyrights wars” chokes creativity and criminalizes people who share stuff online.
