Introduction What would be the Unions role in the 21st century? Do Unions have a future? Numerous discussions argue that the improvements of Human Resources Management (HRM) is an alternative that will substitute labor unions in the future, but still as a point of debate and investigation (Machin, 2005). A couple of hundreds years ago, the slavery has been replaced by the employment; However, the employers kept fixating on their own benefits and not providing enough to the needs and inclinations of their labor force. As a result workers needed to endeavour hard to acquire their rights, which Unions had a pivotal role on defending the labor force. The Unions came up when conflicts between organizations and labor force started to increase in the industrialization; the manual workforce was supplanted by automated production. It began in Great Britain and spread to other countries such as America, France, Germany, and other places in Europe (Teasley, 2008). The Unions were created to represent the workers and negotiate with the organization to get better rights for them (Radcliffe, 2014). On the other hand, government from numerous nations, considered Unions as illegal during the Industrial Revolution, and those employees that belonged to a Union could be captured, and the responsible for interrupting the production (Teasley, 2008). There are two types of Unions, one that represents workers from a specific job, called trade union; and one that represents workers in a particular industry, called industrial union (Radcliffe, …show more content…
On the one hand, organizations in unionized systems show an absence of flexibility, and on the other hand, Unions can emphasize the productivity of an organization (Gill and Meyer, 2013). According to Verma (2005), studies show that unionized companies will probably utilize less strategies for recruiting and selecting employees, such as daily papers, referrals, walk-ins and other external channels of hiring than a non-unionized business. These external channels of job advertisement are very popular in the modern life and it might be a disadvantage for the younger generation, who utilize it to seek job opportunities. Unions also tend to force formal trial period on new employees. Unionized corporations are more averse to utilize temporary, part-time and subcontracting workers, which reduces organizational adaptability. In controversy, Unions do not appear to diminish the firm’s capacity to embrace advancements in items or procedures, and they may generally increase the probability of adopting workplace practices that contribute to efficiency.
