PRIVATE SECTOR UNIONS DECLINING-AN HOUR OF CONCERN
INTRODUCTION
Unionization of employees, employers and organizations can be seen in almost every country of the world, including Canada. Worker unions not only ensured better wages and adequate work hours but also ensured safe working environments and better social life of the workers. Unions offer a ray of hope and support for every worker whenever any misconduct occurs with the workers. Surprisingly, at present, the overall trend of unionization of workers in private sector is on a decline in Canada from the past 30 years. Contrastingly, the public sector is highly unionized and almost 70% of public sector in Canada is unionized. This article tends to discuss an online article of “CBC news”

A careful analysis of the news article, certain causes of the above mentioned issues have been realized. One of the major reason of this issue is that current government rules, regulations and laws have almost fulfilled all the requirements that unions demand for, such as safer workplaces, fair treatment of workers, no discrimination of any type, adequate salaries and working hours etc. These government regulations are applicable everywhere in Canada whether the workplaces are unionized or non-unionized. "Where there were concerns generations ago about health and safety in the workplace, a lot of those elements are now embedded in regulations that govern employers and apply to all workplaces, whether unionized or not." (Press, 2012) As such, major issues of workers are resolved. Moreover, major movements such as feminist movement and union movement of the 20th and 19th century respectively, have led to acceptance of workers’ demands and paved the way for current labor laws. Another major reason is the current growth in the service sector of Canada, which is a highly unorganized sector. Also, employers are scattered all over the country, especially the smaller employers. So, to organize these smaller employers is really a difficult task than to unionize thousands of workers, working in large factories. First of all, the workers must be aware of benefits of unions. It is seen that most of the workers are unaware of the actual benefits of being unionized. No matter, where is the working site and numbers of workers working in an organization, workers should unionize themselves for providing themselves a platform where they can voice their grievances to the employers and government, whenever required. They should realize that unity is the real strength of the workers and unions are for the workers. Workers should not ignore the importance of unions, thinking that there are enough laws made by the Canadian government that justify their demands. Workers must think that they can face any sort of problem at any time that may not be covered under the law and unions are first and most important support to solve those problems. Secondly, unions should also be very clear in their agenda and should follow the principle of “unions for the workers” and avoiding the idea of “workers for the unions”. Unions must be effective, efficient and active in their working and should create such an image in the minds of worker that workers feel necessary to be unionized. Unions should not have any political motives and should always strive for fulfilling the demands of workers and fighting for grievances of
