S.W. last menstrual period was 1/14/16. S.W. cycle is regular lasting seven days. S.W. has never had a PAP. S.W. and her boyfriend are currently using condoms most of the time. S.W. denies having any fibroids, blood clots, vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. S. W. also denies any known drug allergies. S. W. has no medical or surgical history.
For as social history, S.W. denies smoking or drinking alcohol. S.W. does not perform self-breast exams. As a college student, S.W. stress level is also high. If S.W. is not within the first seven days of her period, a pregnancy test will be needed to rule out pregnancy. The procedure will be completely sterile to reduce infections to the cervix. Once the IUD has been placed, the IUD has strings attached that the provider will leave intact. The string can hang down through the cervix into the vagina. The strings are not visible form outside of the vagina. S.W. can check her IUD by placing her finger into her vagina. S.W. will receive a card stating the name of the IUD and when it was placed. After the insertion of the IUD, there may be some cramping, but some rest and pain medication can help. A person may have some bleeding ands spotting for the first few days, but this is normal. Also, S.W. should be aware that her first period after the insertion could be heavier than usual. The period may come earlier than expected as well.
