Pregnancy can be wonderful experience when it is expected and planned. However, there are available contraceptives that can reduce the risk of an unintended pregnancy. IUD is one of the safest, effective, and long lasting birth control. IUD is excellent choice for young adults. S.W. an 21 year old presented to the clinic inquiring about a type of IUD, Para Gard.
Currently, S.W. is a college student pursing her degree in nursing. She is active on campus. While not busy with schoolwork, S.W. spends her time with her boyfriend. S.W. and her boyfriend have been dating for two years. S.W. is wants a contraceptive that is cost effective, easy to maintain, and prevents pregnancy. S.W. is interested in the Para Gard because she has read great reviews

S.W. last menstrual period was 1/14/16. S.W. cycle is regular lasting seven days. S.W. has never had a PAP. S.W. and her boyfriend are currently using condoms most of the time. S.W. denies having any fibroids, blood clots, vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. S. W. also denies any known drug allergies. S. W. has no medical or surgical history.
For as social history, S.W. denies smoking or drinking alcohol. S.W. does not perform self-breast exams. As a college student, S.W. stress level is also high. In the nursing program, there can be sleepless nights, lots of studying, and projects. S.W. is on a regular diet. S.W. sexual orientation is heterosexual. S. W. has one sexual partner. S.W. and boyfriend use condoms during sex. For as family history, S.W. states that her mother has hypertension and diabetes. S.W. father has no medical

will return to clinic within one week. The provider will go over lab results. If all labs are negative, an IUD can be placed in the office. If S.W. is not within the first seven days of her period, a pregnancy test will be needed to rule out pregnancy. The procedure will be completely sterile to reduce infections to the cervix. Once the IUD has been placed, the IUD has strings attached that the provider will leave intact. The string can hang down through the cervix into the vagina. The strings are not visible form outside of the vagina. S.W. can check her IUD by placing her finger into her vagina. S.W. will receive a card stating the name of the IUD and when it was placed. After the insertion of the IUD, there may be some cramping, but some rest and pain medication can help. A person may have some bleeding ands spotting for the first few days, but this is normal. Also, S.W. should be aware that her first period after the insertion could be heavier than usual. The period may come earlier than expected as well. It is ok to have sex once the person feels comfortable (Mayo Clinic, 2015). After the first period, S.W. should make an appointment with provider to make sure the strings are still
