There is no field follow up, but rather compilation of reports collected. The NCVS goes to the field, and focuses on facts that were left unattended. The UCR does not look into unreported cases but the NCVS does (Truma 2).
Advantages of UCR over NCVS
The NCVS collect additional information long after the occurrence, through interviews, where the information may vary due to memory issues. The UCR does not collect information after a case. The NCVS generalize victims and defendants, for instance using households for property cases. The UCR is specific, giving focus to individuals and not a society of criminal or defendant (Truma 3).

The New Jersey saw a slight increase in population, from 8,911,502 to 8,938,175, between 2013 and 2014. One would only expect an increase of reported crimes. The contrary occurred. The number of reported crimes decreased drastically, from 25,738 to 23,346. The rate of crimes per 100,000 reduced from 288.9 to 261.2, which is a considerable reduction of crimes per unit population size.
