Underdeveloped Identity Formation of Transgender Individuals
Individuals who identify as transgender are in a society that does not accept them. The negative emotions targeted to them, come into conflict with Identity Formation. Identity Formation essentially is the development of a person, which is greatly necessary in order to live a happy life. It has life stages where certain developmental achievements occur. However, if resolutions to the crisis’s made in previous stages are not fixed, the individual is unable to fully develop for the next one. C., 2002). Reparative therapy is a psychological method that is used to change an individual’s sexuality to heterosexual. Subjects of the LGBT community are put into private offices, inpatient units, residential facilities and boarding schools where they undergo individual and group therapy. The subjects are put under extreme therapies: electrical shocks are given to the hands, torso, and genitals while showing them to homoerotic images (Hein, L., & Powell, L. 2009). In fact reparative therapy does not significantly make a difference, the success rates range from 11% for females to 37% for males (Spitzer, 2003). Additionally, a research study conducted by Trinity College Dublin, used qualitative and quantitative research techniques that studies the effect of Identity Formation on the LGBT community (Mayock, P., Bryan, A., Carr, N., & Kitching, K., 2009). The research team used online survey, “community assessment process”, and in-depth individual interviews with 40 LGBT people (aged 14-73). The online survey included demographics, schooling, harassments, and verbal/physical experiences where 11,000 people participated. Within that study, 86% of online survey participants and 90% in-depth interview participants had depression. In addition to over 60% of in-depth interview participants said that their depression was associated with social challenges connected with their body identification. The research team had an overall conclusion that identity plays a huge role in the experiences of the LGBT community. Specifically, supporting that identity and experience strengthen resilience in the lives of the LGBT community. The study validates Identity Formation and its
