When it comes to implicit biases, I think it is important to recognize the difference between implicit biases that cause negative effects and those that do not. For instance, an example of a neutral implicit bias would be having the options of a red and blue Gatorade. Since your favorite color is blue, you are implicitly bias towards choosing the blue Gatorade. However, this bias has no effect on anyone else. A similar yet consequently different scenario would be choosing to sit next to your Caucasian peer in class rather than your African American peer because you are Caucasian.…

Media Bias Bias damages research as the researcher chooses to allow his bias to distort the measurements and observations or their interpretation. Bernie Sanders’ plan ensures that every American student gets the opportunity to go to college regardless of their family’s financial situation. Each article proves how the author reveals bias by revealing the rhetoric that persuades the intended audience and who’s responsible for the perpetuation of misinformation. I totally agree with Ann Morrison’s assumptions and while there are some improvements in areas such as the opportunities for education, and laws that support fair hiring such as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, discrimination still happens. “Although the specific barriers to advancement differ from one organization to another, their effect is the same.” (pg 242) I believe all cultures have the issue of feeling more comfortable when dealing with one’s own kind, however, it is more promote when you have a larger number of one race or sex in management which results in the hiring decision. Unfortunately, we live in a world where it’s who know and not what you know also known as the “good ole boy network”. If you are not a part of the network it’s hard to break through in most companies.…

In a previous sociology class, I took the gender proportion of the IAT and just as with the race proportion it found unconscious biases. I think the results shocked me, because growing up you're told to treat everyone equally and after taking this test it shows external you may think that. The Muslim religion is one of the most discriminated against minorities in the world. Many people believe that Muslim people are a threat to their society, and therefore treats them like they are inhuman and untrustworthy. Another minority that is greatly discriminated against is women. Sadly, there are people out there who have to deal with the marginalization of both women and the Muslim religion. Muslim women are treated unfairly in America (primarily after 9/11) and in their Islamic religion because many people assume that they are a threat and the Muslim religion has a strong male bias; if the media stops crucifying Muslim women and instead treats them as equals, then the world will be one step closer to ending discrimination against Muslim…

To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…

Cognitive biases are irrational patterns that occur in our thought processing. At the surface, they only seem to misconstrue our perception of reality and hinder our ability to reach a logical conclusion when faced with a problem or situation. However, through further research and investigations, psychologists have discovered that this apparent flaw in our minds has been a necessary part of our evolution. These biases help us make sense of the vast, complex world around us by simplifying the information we receive. Instead of consciously thinking about every single situation we come across, our minds detect a pattern and we follow through with the actions programmed in our heads.…

Cognitive bias is a limitation in objective thinking that is caused by the tendency for the human brain to perceive information through a filter of personal experience and preferences.
