Uncle Tom's Cabin: Character Analysis

Various techniques of contrast and opposites regarding different races, sexes, and regions are employed in Uncle Tom’s Cabin in order to emphasize the main theme of propagandizing love and equality. Among those dichotomies, the description of two characters with opposing believes and personalities, Uncle Tom and Simon Legree, is probably the most evident contrast.

Uncle Tom, as the main character, represents a symbol of loyal and piety. He is so loyal that he wouldn’t take the advantage of being trusted even if he has the chance to abscond with money.
