Ebony Magazines feature articles concerning topic of attention to their subscribers: fashion, sports automobiles, hair products, politics, etc. The basis of such magazine, however, isn’t just fashion, automobiles, hair products, and politics; it is also the advertisements for cleaning supplies. It makes sense, for an advertisement in ebony magazine because Gain has been exceptionally successful with meeting, and understanding the needs of increasing populations of ethnic consumers, with the majority being African Americans and Hispanics. Whether foreign or domestic, this would appeal a periodicals’ strongest selling point. The purpose is to convince the audience to buy Ultra Gain Dishwashing Liquid through the use of bold text, images, and color/layout. In the Ultra Gain Dishwashing Liquid advertisement a metaphor is used in fun font that states, “Dishwashing May Never Feel This Great. But It Can Smell Great”. Ebony Magazine utilizes figure of speech to link the product to an enjoyable time while washing dishes, even though in reality they know that dishwashing isn’t that fun. The lingering text at the bottom of the advertisement, which is printed in smaller font from the quote above states that “There’s more to Gain!” This quote creates a message that if this product is purchased there is more to gain than just clean dishes. The reason for this is that the colors capture the consumer’s attention and then causes them to read the advertisement. Red, yellow, blue, green, orange, white, etc., are displayed all over the page.
