The largest and primary investigative arm of the DHS is the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). The responsibility of the ICE division is to identify and investigate weaknesses within the nation's borders, develope intelligence regarding threats, get rid of foreign nationals, and enforce over 400 federal statutes. In 2003, the ICE division was formed as a result of several federal agency mergers including the Customs Service, the Federal Protective Service, and Immigration and Naturalization and as part of the Homeland Security Act.
