Household inequality is the idea that there are certain gender roles in the household that limit what women can do (Sen 2001). A typical stereotype for women in the household are that they should be home to take care of the children, clean, and cook. This article is not an empirical article. In the article the author has one main argument. The authors argument is about gender inequality. More specifically how gender inequality affects women. In Sen Amartya’s article he describes seven forms of gender inequality that women face in today’s world. The seven types are Mortality, Natality, Basic-Facility, Special- Opportunity, Professional, Ownership and Household Inequality. (Sen 2001) Women are not treated equally. The author has seven forms of inequality to show how women are discriminated against. Gender inequality is so terrible that in some cultures they only want boy children. If a family is expecting a baby, the parents only want the new baby to be a boy. (Sen 2001) Opportunities for women are also far less than they are for men, and this needs to change. In some cultures, women are not able to go receive higher forms of education or go to any form of school at all. Women are instead encouraged to stay at home and be a stereotypical woman. By not giving women the same opportunities as men to go to school and get a higher form of educations, they can’t get the same types of jobs as men. While reading this article I asked myself a few questions. The first of these questions was what happened in history to create this gender inequality for women? I always found myself wondering if there was gender inequality during the caveman days? The men would go off to hunt and the women would be left to take care of the children and go gathering what food they could find. Could gender inequality have started then? Another question I asked myself was why are women not given the same opportunities as men? In my experiences, a woman can complete tasks just as well as a man, if not better at times. Everybody has a certain set of skill that they are best at. So why prevent someone for recognizing their true potential just because they are a woman? That question just made my head spin. If a woman is more qualified than a man for a job then the woman should get the job, and vice versa, if a man is more qualified for a job then a woman then the man should get the job.
