Eliel has a simple diet he tries to follow. Eliel tries to avoid or minimize sugary foods, bread and starches like potatoes and rice. When he does eat rice, he will chose brown rice over white rice. If he craves sweets he will satisfy his craving with fruit. Diet is important for controlling type 2 diabetes, but drug therapy is also needed. “There are four classes of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes: insulin sensitizers, insulin secretagogues, drugs that slow the absorption of carbohydrates in the gut, and incretins” (Little, 2013 p. 230). The way Metformin works is by decreasing the production of glucose, while it improves insulin sensitivity. This drug would fall into the insulin sensitizer category. Metformin gives his body the balance he needs to function on a daily basis, and allows him to have normal treatments without

My father was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and the way it affected him sparked my interest in medicine. At GCSE level, I learnt that diabetes results when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Further interest led me to learn that the most common drug used is metformin, reducing the amount of glucose released. Currently the only way to delay/prevent diabetes in people who may have genetic predispositions to it is by maintaining a healthy weight. Recently, a study in Diabetologia showed that obese people with prediabetes could improve their metabolic health, by avoiding AGE products.…

Dental anxiety and phobia are very common today; it is estimated that about 9-15 percent of Americans fear the dentist.
