Type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile diabetes, infects only 5% of people with diabetes. It usually occurs in children and young adults. People with type 1 diabetes have to be very careful to check the sugar level in their blood, especially during athletic activity. My friend from my lacrosse team had to take breaks during the game to check his sugar levels and sometimes drink juice or eat candy bars if his levels were too low.
