Two Examples Of Figurative Language In Eleanor Rigby

The theme in the poem “Eleanor Rigby” is how lonely people can be in a world full of people. The author is portraying how sad Eleanor is, and how the father of the church, Father McKenzie, might seem like the type that would not get lonely, feels the same way as Eleanor. I agree with the author’s point of view on this. From personal experience, I understand that even though someone might be in a room full of people and friends, they might still feel lonely. Being lonely isn’t always just about having no one around. It can mean you don’t feel like you are connected to anyone, or maybe you feel deserted and as though you are screaming out but no one can hear you. One example is when the author says (about Eleanor), “Wearing the face she keeps in a jar by the door.” This is an example of a metaphor because Eleanor doesn’t really keep a certain face in a jar by the door. The author is trying to say that Eleanor has different “faces” or personalities she wears around different people or settings. Another example of figurative language is, “Died in the church and was buried along with her name. This is another metaphor, the author is saying that Eleanor had no family and no siblings to carry on the family name so it was “buried” or lost when Eleanor passed away. One other example of figurative speech in this poem is symbolism. Symbolism is used in the line, “Picks up the rice in a church where a wedding has been”. The author is using rice being thrown after a wedding and Eleanor picking it up as a symbol for her never getting close enough to be invited to a wedding, let alone have a wedding herself. It is showing that the only connection to a wedding is her picking up the rice after it has
