There are several allusions used by Shakespeare to support his ideas. These allusions penetrate the minds of his readers. Moreover, the allusions have elevated the literary value of almost all the plays of Shakespeare. In Twelfth Night, Orsino calls himself deer, which is being hunted. It is the story from Greek mythology. Actaeon was a hunter in Greek mythology. One day he went for hunting in the wood and he caught sight of Goddess Artemis, who was bathing there. Artemis was so furious that she turned Actaeon into a deer to be hunted and torn by hounds. Orsino compares Olivia with Artemis and himself with Actaeon. Like Artemis, Olivia is beautiful like and he is captivated by her beauty. She is also like a hunter, and Orsino is like her prey. Orsino also calls Olivia, as Diana, the Roman Goddess of the moon, hunt and spiritual love. In act one Shakespeare states, “For they shall yet belie thy happy years,/that say thou art a man. Diana’s lip” (Act 1 Scene 4). Instead of using allusion, if the writer had merely called that Orsino has fallen in love with a beautiful lady, it would not have created the impact on the reader’s mind.
