On this paper I’ll start with my grandparents’ life which I consider the start of my personal history. I’ll point on how my own family and our life in Turkey has been affected by the events in the United States history and Turkey’s relationship with United States.
Turkey's relationship with the United States began right before the cold war. In 1947, United States Congress started to give Turkey economic and military assistance. Because of the threats from the Soviet Union, United States wanted Turkey to become an ally and interested in keeping a good relationship. When Menderes was selected, farming animals and agriculture was very improved. Our family was also farming animals and working in agriculture industry so the election helped us. Our family was living in the east part of Turkey and after the selections our family moved to west part of Turkey, İstanbul. After they moved, they started trading for a living. They moved to a city called Şişli. After that, farming kind of ceased and industry was improved.
During Korean War, Turkey contributed to the UN (United Nations forces), and joined NATO in 1952. During the Cold War, Turkey helped NATO’s on the southeastern part of asia against Warsaw Pact countries. Turkey risked a nuclear war during the Cold War because of its position. Between 1950 and 1970, Turkey received military aid from the United States, also hosted an Air Base for United States Air Force.
