The Common Man’s Tragic Hero In Arthur Miller’s “Tragedy and the Common Man” the author outlines his argument that the common man can have a prominent place in modern literary tragedies, just as those of noble birth did in the classic tragedies of the past. In Larry Watson’s Montana 1948, the main character, Wes, demonstrates Miller’s definition of a common tragic hero through his struggle to do the right thing after his brother murders a young Native American woman in the town where Wes is the sheriff. Up until this point in his life, Wes had always “gone with the flow” and lived the life that his father wanted for him. Through a series of events, Wes must choose between family loyalty and justice for his brother’s victim. The tragedy of…

However, his reign only lasted four years because his brutal methods made the state highly unstable. In “Macbeth”, by William Shakespeare, an equally horrible man named Macbeth presides over the kingdom of Scotland. He seems destined to have the same fate as Pot, who had to retreat into hiding after his government crumbled. In “Heart’s Ambition”, Travis Mitchell indirectly explains why this will happen to Macbeth: his lack of morals and depressed emotional state will be the driving force that causes his subjects to initiate a revolution.…

The concept of free will is central to criminal justice; criminals are punished for the actions that they choose to make. When punished, the court establishes that criminals are fully aware of the crime that they are committing.
