On the far wall, Rex discovered what had to be a vault; a hulking door of sandwiched metal with two brass rods bolted horizontally and another running down the middle, making a double-headed T with large cylinders at the junctions and a miniature pirate ship wheel in the center. Near the wheel, a panel of interwoven steel bars and levers encompassed a sculpted bird—a pigeon—and four keyholes … some kind of crazy invention must be in there to require that kind of safekeeping.

It must be because she was so nice. And pretty. Then he forgot how he normally stood, and whether his hands should be in his pockets or hanging at his sides. As seconds ticked by, he became more and more flustered.
"Rex!" Tulla grabbed his sweaty hand and pulled him to the young man taking off his headgear. "This is Levi Nickleby. Levi, this is Rex Bright."
Perhaps he was trying to comb it, but when Levi ran his hand through his dark hair, it only became more wild in an electrocuted meet licked-by-a-cow kind of way. He said hello as he fixated on something on his workbench.
“Levi, Rex is an inventor!” said Tulla. Why in the world would she say that? Shoelaces that didn’t untie couldn’t compare to inventions that had to be locked up _in a vault_. Rex thought about hiding and started scanning for a safe place.
“No one is allowed in the laboratory.”
“Oh, I know, Levi, but Rex won’t tell anyone anything … right, Rex?”
