In the past year, western states have faced the rise of right-wing individuals vying for leadership and in some cases, being voted into power. On January twentieth, the United States swore their right-wing administration under President Trump. An interview given days before inauguration the President outlined a view for his presidency on foreign policy through trade, immigration, and a push for a stronger military and borders. The interview, focuses on the topics of immigration or refugees and the European Union (EU) to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) finally domestic and international relations importance of trade and military. Liberalism stresses the importance of institution and cooperation with other states. To eventually, end with intuitional systems above the state level of control of anarchy of the natural world. This is a key piece to liberalism in the modern world, and it is important to liberalism to understand the criticism that Trump gives of state cooperation.
Trump comment about NATO may seem slightly strange, but liberals would say it is an important step: “nato was obsolete…[however] nato is very important to me”. This is crucial to the liberal viewpoint, through the importance of state leadership to understand if they believe institutions are failing helps to create improvement and progress. The state must understand the importance of institutions because this is how we move towards the end goal. While this view of NATO is confusing it is important to understand in liberalism. Trump attacked the EU as well for not being efficient, for example, that to get approval for a building would take years.
