Fate is defined as the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. Destiny is fate, but coincidence is the fate that makes one's true destiny. The novel implies fate as a predetermined path, although sudden coincidences change that path making one's true destiny. Fate is shown throughout this novel as a certain path that one takes no matter what comes their way. Although destiny seems to be the end result, the sudden change in fate that was always supposed to happen. Iris’ fate of forever being controlled by Richard although, finding Laura’s journal was the true destiny that was hidden by a coincidence. Laura was destined to die from death itself. From a young age Laura believed that death was the easy way out and that became apparent in her young adult life when she later committed suicide. When Laura was young, she had tried to drown herself in search of that easy way out and be back with her mother. From that point on her life was never going to be long, she was destined to die from death itself. Death seemingly tore Laura apart. As much as Iris had tried to make her death not a suicide the facts had all pointed towards it. Iris knew it was suicide, but the idea of having someone else tell her that just added to her grief and anger. All Laura’s life she was trying to get back to her mother and in her mind she was changing what had happened so many years ago. Death was Laura’s weakness, that she would have done anything to get back. Laura had committed suicide soon after she was informed that her lover, Alex was killed in war. Alex’s death was the coincidence that showed her true destiny was death itself. Death once again was the power that was taking over Laura. Laura was searching for the easy way in making hardships go away, making the sadness she was feeling disappear, unknowingly creating it for others. Before Laura was able to realize it her life was being taken over by death and in the end Laura's life was destined to be ended by death itself.
