Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a condition that is caused by an extra copy of the 21st chromosome (Atchison & Dirette, 2017). The cause of this extra chromosome is unknown, although maternal age is one factor that has been linked to higher rates of incidence (NDSS, 2017). Down Syndrome is diagnosed at birth and can be identified by specific physical characteristics, such as a slightly flattened facial profile, upward slant to the eyes, low muscle tone, and a single deep crease on the palm of the hand.
