The destruction of a guilty conscience In a separate peace by John Knowles, the authors uses internal and external conflict, irony, and tragic flaw, to show Gene’s struggle with conscience and guilt and how these feelings influenced his decisions. Gene made several bad decisions in the novel including spending the night on the beach with Finny instead of preparing for a trigonometry test, letting his feeling of jealousy take over and causing Finny to fall from the tree and break his leg and coming clean with the truth to Finny that he purposely bounced the limb so Finny would fall. Knowles provides an example of internal conflict when Gene states, “ I looked at the sky and the ocean and knew that it was around six thirty.…

What did the British and patriots think of the Liberty Tree? To start off, the British thought that the Liberty tree stood for war and violence because it symbolized the, “...violent, mob-uprising, side of the American Revolution”. I am an influential American writer, I write essays and pamphlets. I wrote many essays and pamphlets; Liberty Tree is my most recent one prior to this event. I wrote it to warn the American Colonist of the threats to their liberty posed by the British King and Parliament. I believe that since we have foreign dependence, limited commerce and a strict legislative we can’t be recognized as our own. Loyalist and Parliament can’t see how great we could actually be when we’re independent.…

The author of “On Natural Death” by Lewis Thomas begins his essay by being lighthearted about death and progressively gets more into depth with the aspects of death for different living things and whether or not they detect pain. This is to objectify the fact that death is destined for all living things and that it shouldn’t be planned or feared but instead, it should be accepted. The first strategy Lewis Thompson uses is denouncing books about death. Lewis emphasizes that death is becoming planned with there being “so many new books about dying” placed next to “the health diet and home repair paperbacks”. Lewis insinuates that the topic of planned death is considered ordinary to where it’s placed next to everyday topics and accepted by society who doesn’t think twice about it.…
