On August 2, 1943, prisoners started to steal weapons, but were discovered before they could rise up. Hundreds of prisoners started to march to the main gates in attempt to escape. Many of them were killed. An estimate of 300 or more escaped, but most were eventually tracked down and killed. Those who survived and found in “good health” were sent back to the camp to dismantle it.
