Treatment of Prisoners in the Holocaust Regardless of what concentration or extermination camp they were shipped off to, prisoners of the Nazis were treated with extreme cruelty and hatred. Indeed, an estimated 11 to 17 million people died under the shadow of Hitler’s reign (Hurber 345). Many of the people at concentration camps had done nothing wrong; still they were overworked to the point of death. Additionally, others, at extermination camps, were killed just because Hitler did not like their people (Hurber 348). The sheer cruelty of the Nazis towards their prisoners is almost unfathomable, but sadly true. Doctors at Auschwitz attempted to sterilize men and women by irradiation. This procedure resulted in serious burns and swelling, but the prisoners were sent back to work. Over 200,000 men and women were sterilized by the Nazis so that they could rid the population of those other than the “master race.” Another horrendous experiment performed by the Nazis on their prisoners was the freezing experiment in which scientists were looking for a cure for hypothermia. Victims were placed in containers of ice water for over an hour before various methods of warming their bodies up were attempted. At other concentration camps, new drugs to fight infectious diseases were tested on prisoners (Woolf 1). All in all, the medical experiments performed by the Nazis shed light on their cruelty towards human beings. In conclusion, the malice the Nazis showed to their prisoners was extreme. Through concentration camps, extermination camps, and unethical medical experiments, the Nazis tortured and killed many innocent people.
