Trayvon Martin Luther King's Perception Of Racial Profiling In Action

Improved Essays
When I started my project I had to figure out the order I wanted the video clips and statistic to go in (see appendix 9). So the video would not have a sense of clutter ness. I decided to open my video up with a news clip that portrayed racial profiling in action. The reason I choose to start it off with a news clip is because it grabs the viewer attention. The next thing in my video was a quote from Martin Luther King which stated “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” After the Martin Luther King quote was stated the next slide is where I put my inquiry question so people would know the purpose of this video. I then found a video on YouTube where a man was listing …show more content…
The second clip was Freddie Gray; he was arrested by Baltimore police department for possessing what police alleged was an illegal switchblade. After those two videos a picture saying “skin color is not a reasonable suspicion” was placed there to break up the videos. But after the picture the third clip was Kalief Browder; who was arrested at sixteen on false charges of robbery and imprisoned without conviction for three years. Next was a picture of Trayvon Martin who is another victim. The fifth video clip was Eric Garner; Eric was placed into a choke hole by NYPD officers for suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs, and the last video clip was Laquan McDonald. Laquan was shot for having a 3 inch blade in his right hand. I then decided to end the video by saying more people have been affected by racial profiling and include images of people at rallies. The last slide on the video said hashtag black lives matter. During the process of me making this video I did not have to alter any of my specifications my supervisor and I had decided …show more content…
With me communicating to people about why I choose this topic and what my video is about strengths my communication skill. My critical thinking skill has also grown with this project, because it is made up of all my ideas and if a problem came about it was up to me to resolve the issue.

Lastly, my creative thinking skills has also grown during the process of this product, because I knew I wanted to make a video, but this would have been my first time making a video which demanded such technical skills like editing and adding clips from different sources. Plus I had to also be creative the configuration of the video so the viewers would stay interested. My global context which is fairness and development relates to racial profiling because racial profiling is not fair at all nor is it equal.
The development part is that people have campaigns going around advocating for black lives and brining awareness about racial profiling. Racial profiling is an issue everyone needs to know about because were supposed to live in a country where you can live freely with an equal opportunity. But with racial profiling certain races, ethnicities, or religions is not given the same advantages. We as a community has recognized the problem and now are trying to fix

In both cases, the attack of Rodney King and the murder of Michael Brown were not the initial cause of the riots. The riots were caused by racial tension that had been building in both areas for some time. As a former law enforcement officer, it is one’s responsibility to foresee dangerous situations and combat them. In these two circumstances, one could see the tension building, yet no one took it upon themselves to decrease the tension. In both cases, a committee should have been enacted prior to the explosive emotions that caused the riots.…

Question 6 According to Martin Luther King, the local white clergy don’t seem to care about the Negro being treated unfairly. They believe that the movement should fight through the courts, rather than protest on the streets, seeing as it was creating an immense amount of tension. The local white clergy see the Negro community as “outsiders coming in”. Martin Luther King says “the ‘moderate’ is more devoted to ‘order’ then to justice”.…

For the class variable, I measured the number of emails I sent vs how many I receive. I decided to measure my school email instead of my personal email because I send more emails on my school email than personal email. One of my personal variables, I collected data on how many hours I listen to music at home vs. school. I counted this variable by having a stopwatch start as soon as the song started. I would pause the stopwatch when I press pause on the song at the end of the day or when school is over.…

Racial profiling and racial bias is a common theme existing today even in the application of schools. Racial bias exists in the frontline where cops bring in criminals but also behind the scenes within the court. Zero tolerance can be seen as an unjust law mainly because it applies mostly to the minority. The intention was to eliminate drugs and guns yet this was rarely found. Instead the zero tolerance law is being used in some abusive ways to funnel minority kids to prison for petty crimes.…

On October thirteenth Jasmine Rand was a guest speaker, along with four Mount Pleasant Police and Central Michigan University campus officers in Plachta Auditorium. Students were given the opportunity to write questions that Rand and the officers would be asked, however, I didn’t participate due to the high volume of questions that had already been obtained. Because Rand was Michael Brown and Trayvon Martins attorney in their civil rights case this presentation was expected to be about these cases that lead to the “Black Lives Matter” movement, race issues, and police brutality which have greatly affected both African American culture and views of police culture. Although, these expectations were exceeded by touching on Rand 's educational…

One very contradictory issue that has emerged over the recent years within community policing is racial profiling. Racial profiling is defined as the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. Profiling of this nature impacts communities, minority groups, and even policing agencies in a negative manner ultimately. Many argue that criminal profiling differs from racial profiling and is a vital part of the job therefore it must be done. Others argue that it is not as great of a problem as the media sometimes portrays it to be.…

Good morning everyone, I am Chief of police Glenn Alred, We are here this morning to address the issue with the data gathered of controversial police stops. Some might think this data shows a disproportion of stops when it comes to race. I would like to start by saying that we have implemented a program called “operation safer streets” this program was founded in 2002 by the Philadelphia police department. This program along with the Broken window program we already have in place will allow us as a police department to enforce the crime data given to us by compstats. All of these programs have resulted in great success in the efforts or reducing crime and calls for service in other cities.…

Martin Luther King Jr, a civil rights movement leader, said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. " I, for one, agree with him. In a free society, everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and express them peacefully. It positively impacts a society because: it teaches the younger generation that their voice matters, it brings people together and strengthens bonds, and it allows people to protest or support their opinions in a respectful manner.…

One aspect of police profiling that has received a great deal of attention in the news lately, although it has been a problem for many years, is racial profiling, when a police officer targets people based on their skin color or ethnic background (“Racial Profiling: Definition”). Often, people respond to this through riots, such as in 1992, when Rodney King was beaten down by four police officers. Even though this event was captured on video, the officers involved were acquitted of any wrongdoing. A six-day riot followed, totalling in over one billion dollars in damages. There has also been a number of smaller scale riots and protests recently as a result of racial…
