Traumatic Brain Injury Case Study

The patient presents with a significant history of traumatic brain injury with facial reconstruction and vertebral fractures, chronic ace and back pain, neuropathy, and acid reflux.The patient presented to the emergency room after a seizure witnessed by the wife at home. Wife believed seizure lasted for 45 seconds and patient feel to the floor and hit his head. The patient states that he has had increasing episodes on intermittent tremors, and starring off for the last year. CTscan of the head shows no acute intracranial abnormalities. The patient is being admitted for new onset of a seizure. The patient was experiencing a headache starting on admission. It was located in the frontal lobe and has a constant duration. Characteristics of headache pain were dull and aggravated by light and sound. …show more content…
The patient had not taken any treatments for the headache and the pain was a level 7 out of10.Discharge diagnosisPatient is admitted to the hospital on January 31st with wife who witnessed the patient's first seizure. The patient understands why they were hospitalized at the time and is worried about seizures changing current lifestyle. Specific teaching for seizures includes an understanding of the disease, cutting down on risk factors, treatment, and precautions. The mechanism of a seizure is described as, “a sudden, explosive, disorderly discharge of cerebral neurons and it is characterized by a sudden, transient alteration in brain function, usually involving motor,sensory, autonomic, or psychic clinical manifestation and a temporary altered level of arousal”(Osborn & Watson 2014, p.354). In laymen terms for the patient to understand, a seizure can bedescribed as a an uncontrolled discharge of neurons in the brain.
