When I went to my orientation last year, I did not want to be there. I was not excited for college, and I was upset that I had to attend orientation for two days. I did not know anyone in my orientation group, and I spent most of the time alone and uncomfortable. By the end of the first day, I had decided that I did not want to come to Wichita State and that I had made a bad decision. My transition mentors were great people, but they did not notice that I was miserable. That is one of the reasons I want to be a transition mentor. Because of my experience at orientation, I will be able to notice the students that may be feeling the way I did, and I can help them realize that they are doing what is best for them.
Once I got to college and had some experiences, I realized that I really did love it here. However, my first month was very rough, and I begged my mom multiple times to let me come home. This experience will be very helpful during adult orientation programs, because I will be comfortable interacting with them and will be able to answer any questions they may have about adult programs here at Wichita State. I am also a member of Delta Delta Delta and have experience with Greek life in general. It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

I came to Hope Orientation in August of 2016, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, fresh off of a summer at SpringHill Camps. My enthusiasm to begin college was matched by over 100 individuals in matching orange t-shirts and I was enthralled. While the other freshman in my group were hesitant to take part in the child-like games, I thrived. Though I didn’t understand the method, I loved the madness: the over-the-top skits, meeting 200 people over the course of one hour, and my favorite, icebreakers. Orientation gave freshman the opportunity to take one last dip into childhood before being slingshotted into adulthood -- and it worked wonders on a group of awkward freshmen.…
