This study was conducted to analyze the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIA). Although previous research inferred that posttraumatic stress disorder lead to the increase of cardiovascular disease, more recent research suggests that posttraumatic stress disorder may occur as a result of a stroke. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder were recently noted by 18% of individuals who suffered a stroke or transient ischemic attack. It is believed that individuals who experience posttraumatic stress disorder after the initial stroke or transient ischemic attack are more likely to suffer relapse. Data was collected from recently published articles containing accurate information regarding the connection between posttraumatic stress disorder with strokes and transient ischemic attacks from the onset of symptoms until January 31, 2013. The articles examined were published by databases such as: Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PILOTS Database, The Cochrane Library and Scopus. Factors such as onset of posttraumatic symptoms and evaluation, range and country of …show more content…
The results showed that the onset of posttraumatic symptoms and evaluation was different across all 9 studies. Results from the random effects model showed that posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms arose in 23% of cases examined within one year after a stroke or transient ischemic attack and 11% following the first year. This study concluded that posttraumatic stress disorder is commonly due to strokes or transient ischemic attacks and preventative measurements should be taken into consideration to avoid future
