The work I have choose from the Missouri University Museum is Young Woman with a Sprig of Jasmine. The Rococo style painting was done by Pietro Rotari. Rotari was born into a Veronese family in 1707. In Venice, he received training from Antonio Balestra then went back to Verona to open a painting school. Pietro Rotari spent his last couple years working for the Russian aristocracy until he died in 1762.
Rotari worked in the Rococo era which was characterized by pastel colors and a cheerful mood. Young Woman with a Sprig of Jasmine was finished in 1760. The work displayed the ideal beautiful woman or some may say “pin-up” girl. The woman in the painting has very pale skin, a low cut shirt and fashionable jewelry. I believe her appearance shows that she is wealthy and intelligent. Because of the color scheme, story of the woman being simply idealized and era I compared it to

Both of the paintings were done in the Rococo period, using pastel colors. The paintings used soft hues to create a light hearted feeling. Both of the women painted, have soft pale skin and pink lips to show perfection and idealism. Also, the women portray beauty in that era by wearing low cut corsets. Rotari wanted his painting to represent the beautiful women of the Rococo period. Maurice-Quentin de La Tour showed Madame de Pompadour an arbiter of good taste and beauty. The artists show their women to be smart by giving a distant look in both of the women faces. It shows that both women is seeking out something or someone. Madame de Pompadour could be waiting for Louis XV and the woman in Rotari’s painting could be waiting for her man. She is shown as a pin-up girl, so, there is no doubt she has multiple men.
Both of the paintings have multiple similarities such as color scheme, era it was finished and concept between their women. The two works convey a great example of the women during the 19th

In Woman in a Purple Coat (1937), Matisse painted his assistant and companion, reclining in a Moroccan costume, set in an interior with exotic patterns and abstract ornamentation. He has avoided straight lines in this composition, however the colours clash in such a way that the image still works. He uses colour and light to rejoice in life. This was amongst the last of Matisse’s oil paintings. He soon began making paper cut-out collages instead of working in paint, due to ill health.…

Two paintings that really stood out to me were Portrait of María Luisa Gabriela of Savoy painted by Miguel Jacinto Meléndez and Saint Justa by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Despite the face they completely different women, Justa and Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy’s portraits were both painted to appease the standards of proper feminine women in the eyes of men. As a painter of the Baroque and Rococo era, Miguel Jacinto Melendez’s work had a very distinct artistic style that was typical of the early 18th century. Greatly admired for his attention to detail and delicate portraits, Melendez earned a position at…

The two paintings I chose to compare and contrast were Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe and The Birth of Venus. Both paintings were created in different time periods. Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe was created in 1862-1863 by Èdouard Manet. The Birth of Venus was created in 1484-1486 by Sandro Botticelli. When you look at both paintings there are many similarities you can point out just by looking at them.…

The name of the artwork is Art Beauty Shoppe, 1934, by Isaac Soyer and is a 42” x 49” oil on canvas, created in New York City. It is currently exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art. Soyer discovers meaning and beauty in any place he goes. His goal as an artist was to describe human beings and everything that is around him at that moment in an admirable way. This painter used some of his childhood friends in this art piece, which is the woman in the foreground getting a manicure and the man, in the brown outfit, sitting down at the right of the background.…

I think Velazquez was trying to portray a beautiful young girl and her hardworking maids. In the picture Velazquez was trying to portray royalty at it’s finest. A king who would only settle for the best for his daughter. She is waited on hand and foot by her hardworking maids and caretakers. This painting also shows how Velazquez wanted to emphasize how fragile this young girl was.…

Gustave Courbet was a man interested in beauty no matter where he found it while Eugène Delacroix focused more on beauty in war and suffering. Both painters used color to enhance the authenticity of the the people in the images. As well as color, the painters used shadowing and it enhanced the mystery and seriousness of the paintings. Gustave and Eugène both painted pictures of characters that were surrounded by backgrounds that either enhanced them or the scene or the image in the back was blurred to emphasize the unimportance of everything except the characters. Emotion is also evident in both of their paintings.…

The first image is an orientalist painting which represents a forbidden harem. Maryanne Stevens in The Orientalists: Delacroix to Matisse outlines that a piece of art can be identified as “orientalist” by looking at two major elements: 1) the subject matter, and 2) the technique. (Stevens, 15). In this case, the subject matter presents the inner happenings of a Sultan’s harem.…

Rococo style is characterized by the Baroque eroticized, conceived to lend an erotic tone in the environment. The style became exuberant after the death of Louis XIV and artists like Jean-Honore Fragonard and Marie-Louise- Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun depicted this style in their paintings. For example, The Duchess of Polignac by Marie-Louise- Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun in her painting combines the exquisite fashion and the tools of Baroque sensibility from Rembrandt’s dramatic lighting to Ruben’s sensual curves and, given the musical score in the duchess’s hand gives the theatrical moment in the painting.…

Both photos Marcel Duchamp as Rrose Selavy and Portrait (Futago) show the difference in gender roles within the society and cultures they were created. Both used men dressed as women combining the two opposite sexes into one. These images helped to show the world that men in women did not need to be separated and that women could possibly even over power or even overshadow the male figure. These two images brought about the idea through photos that men and women were equal, even if the society in which these images were created refused to see men and women in that…

The comparison between a typical poem about a woman missing her lover and a poem about a lady ghoul or demon of some sort getting herself ready for a feast with her lover illuminates the powerful way the same signifiers of a woman in love can be wielded by skilled poets to create two equally strong but totally conflicting moods. Poem 212 describes young women playing in water and decorating themselves with nature to the delight of the poet. It starts with the image of a girl’s bodice that is soaking wet. The suggestion here is of that soaked bodice clinging to the as of yet unmentioned bodies of the young women. The description of it being wet with “cooling water” suggests that these girls are in the water because of the heat, and as mentioned…

Although both paintings portray the same concept, Cimabue’s Virgin and Child Enthroned, and Raphael’s The Madonna of the Meadows are vastly different. This is because of the different styles, and the different ways of thinking of the two time periods. Obviously these two paintings are portraying the same Christian religious subjects, Mary and the Christ Child. One very noticeable difference is the setting of the two paintings.…
