In the movie, Joe and Simons climb could even be considered risking life or death, however, we will go into more depth. In Touching the Void, life and death scenarios are frequent. This is shown through the many accidents that occur during the story. Such as the time when Joe fell down the crevasse and nearly died. However, these scenarios are not the only definitions of life and death. Life and death scenarios can also be shown through the decisions one must make to survive. A good example of this is shown through Simon’s decision of cutting the rope. As Simon was falling out of his snow seat, he realises that if something is not done soon, not only will Joe die, but he will too. Another example being when Joe decides to abseil to the bottom of the crevasse to find an exit, instead of safely staying where he was. “I wasn’t ready for such a choice. Without deciding I took some coils in hand, and then threw the rope down to the right”, pg.
