To start, Russia is a totalitarianism based society. This is a political concept that the citizen should be totally subject to an absolute state authority. (Merriam-Webster, 2016) Russians may seem a little cold when initially greeting, do not take this personally. Also, do not expect warm smiles upon arriving. Also, shaking hands is upon meeting and leaving is appropriate, although it is not mandatory. Be careful when shaking hands though, do not shake hands over a door frame because the Russians see this as a sign of future arguments.

Please don’t make the ok sign with your hand, it is very rude in Russia. Always be on time when going to a meeting or a dinner. When invited to a house to eat, always leave some food on your plate, they take this as a sign that you have eaten well. Don’t make plans for after dinner, Russians like to talk and be social after a meal. Wait until the host has started to eat before you eat, and accept the food and drink because you don’t want to be rude. Russians are known for drinking, know your limits. Do not nurse your drink, they may see this as rude. Lastly, when making a toast, do not clink your glass with the others if it is not alcoholic. So as a rule of thumb, don’t eat or drink until the host has, and don’t leave until the guest of honor has, and you will have a very successful time in …show more content…
You have to do something to prove yourself to them, but at the same time you must be feminine. Do not take this as a bad thing, let the men do things for you like pull out your chair, walk you to your car, open the door for you, do not take this as a negative sign, it is a cultural thing. Use your womanly charm to even push the envelope a little bit, women tend to get away with asking for favors a little more than men do. You can pay the bill at lunch if you decide to go that route, but be careful, because just like here in the US, if you pay, they might get the impression that you are flirting with them. Russia has a long history of repression due to fear and opposition. Beginning with the Decembrist Uprising and heightening a the Bolshevik Revolution, Russia has experienced a long legacy of brutal and heinous operations and methods to deal with counterrevolutionary opposition, and even mere suspicion. Both Lenin and Stalin feared any source of counter authority, and exhibited this fear by employing the secret police agencies to destroy and suppress the opposition, no matter how brutally. These brutal methods, wether successful or not, certainly inspired fear in Russian citizens, and the secret police adopted a persona as a weapon of the state. Although the KGB and its counterparts started off as brutal, yet fairly disorganized and vague institutions,…

Both Dmitri Trenin and Robert Legvold offer intriguing perspectives into the relationship that the U.S shares with Russia. This weeks reading of Return to the Cold war takes a decidedly more disparaging look at the state of affairs between Russia and the United States. In his book Legvold asserts that tensions between the U.S and the breakdown of relations, that culminated through the crisis in Ukraine has led to a “new cold war” between the two countries. Legvold notes that there are five key components that are still very much at play regarding relations between the two counties.…
