The Cause Of World War II

There are many aspects to the cause of World War II. If any of these causes were to be removed, the war could have been lessened into a smaller war that would not have caused such widespread physical and economic destruction. The Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, Hitler and the Nazi Party, appeasement and Fascism all played key roles in the war, and because of this none of them can be discussed in total isolation from the others. During World War II Germany became allies with Italy, Japan and the Soviet Union although not all at the same time. The policy of appeasement was an agreement between Britain and Germany giving Hitler what he wanted. (Walsh 264). France and Britain followed this policy for many reasons. The allies excused their actions in the beginning by reasoning that Hitler was a “buffer to the threat of spreading Communism” (Walsh 264). At this time many people were afraid of what would happen if Communism spread around the world. The Allies were also afraid that no one would back them up. The United States were not ready to support them if they stood up to Hitler because they did not want to be dragged into another war. Britain and France were also scared that Canada, which at this time was a British Empire and Commonwealth state, would not support them. Britain and France were also worried about the effects at home, because they did not want to repeat the suffering of the last war. Both Britain and France were also still recovering from the recession. Although France and Britain felt like they were doing the best for their countries, they did not realize the repercussions their actions would
