During the period conformed from 1961 to 2011, many fluctuations have occurred throughout the population of the Toronto CMA. Firstly, in 1961, there were just five Inner Suburbs around the central core as well as two outer suburbs. As time advanced, the population began to grow in different locations and scale. Through1971, the inception of outer suburbs was considerable and twelve new communities were constituted outside Metropolitan Toronto. In addition, Mississauga emerged as a big outer suburb with 204,325 inhabitants. Along these first ten years, data shows a slight shrink in the percentage of population in the central city and western inner suburbs; however, others inner suburbs and outer suburbs began to be more inhabited. Toronto rose by only 3% while its inner suburbs, Etobicoke and East York, by 109% and 101%. Furthermore, York Municipality began to develop and grew faster than other municipalities. For instance, its suburbs, Richmond Hill and Vaughan, increased considerably by 169%, and 347%. By 1991, seven rural fringes had been established through the boundaries of the city. From 1991to 2001, there was a small increment in all municipalities of Toronto CMA, oscillating from 2% in King to 37% in Vaughan. By the period of 2001-2006, the central city and suburbs maintained a low increase as in the past ten years; however, Milton had a rise of 71%, bringing a major growth to the Municipality of Halton. Other municipalities did not have a huge variation and continue to grow from 7% in Orangeville to 33% in Brampton. Finally, from 2006 to 2011, Toronto CMA showed minor percentages of growth than in the last decade. Through this period, rural fringes were the areas where less increment of population was registered.
