Tom Robinson is a mockingbird that symbolizes innocence. He is accused and convicted of raping Mayella Ewell, but the truth is that he had never done the crime. When Atticus expresses to his children, “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,” (_lee__) scout ponders, “That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something,”(__lee__). This indicated that killing an innocent creature is not only against man’s law, but against God’s as well. Similar to the bird, Tom Robinson is also an innocent creature whose intention was to be helpful and hardworking. He was targeted, not for his personality, but for his appearance.
