Pitbulls: Article Analysis

The classification of canines known as pit bulls are feared by many people and are often viewed by society as vicious animals. Many people are frightened by pit bulls but they are not instinctively aggressive however their temperament is influenced by the owner. In the article “Dog Bite Statistics” explains that “Owners of pit bulls who attack and kill other people are increasingly criminally prosecuted as homicide cases” (D.B.C.Center). In Tom Junod’s article “The State of the American Dog” he explains many characteristics and experiences about pit bulls. In the article, Junod describes his loving families experience owning two pit bulls. Having a pit bull, unfortunately, restricts a person from certain luxuries such as apartment’s complexes, and Insurance companies like farmers, the company’s usually do this for a liability reason. Such as pit bulls are not allowed at pet’s mart. I believe that pit bulls shouldn't be targeted heavily but more viewed as a regular breed. People have this mindset that pit bulls are born to fight. Dogs only know what they have been taught sense it was a puppy, therefore that’s why some pit bulls come off as very aggressive. People that dislike pit bulls never give the time to look at the good characteristics in them. Pit bulls want to be loved like every other dog but get looked at as a predator. Junod’s family adopted a pit bull named Carson because he lovingly jumped in their lap at the dog shelter as they were looking to add an addition to the family. By knowing the breed of the dog they were twitchy on taking that risk. After taking a “huge risk’ some would say, Carson turned out to be a loving Individual to the family. Junod’s daughter was an only child and looked at Carson as her best friend, by going on walks together, and even feeding him every day then follow with naps. It doesn't have to be pure breed to be considered a pit bull. In an animal shelter a lab, golden retriever, or another breed has a higher chance of being adopted than any breed of pit bull. This is leading factor of the over population of pit bulls and the help of pit bulls owners dropping their dogs off at shelters because they don't want them anymore. For a dog to be in an animal shelter would be compared to a human being in jail. The dogs do not want to be locked up with no field to run and play in. It is unfortunate that these breeds have so much hate towards them when they just want to be
