Fashion of the 1970s “Real fashion change comes from real changes in real life. Everything else is just decoration.” - Tom Ford Fashion in the 70s was greatly impacted by the culture of the time and self reflection. Feminism, hippies, and individualism all helped to change the world of fashion and create new styles. The 70’s brought a brand new style that featured eccentric clothing, androgynous hairstyles, and bold accessories.

The hippie style introduced free flowing hair and a natural look, but feminism had the greatest impact. Because of feminism womens hairstyles were much more androgynous, leading many styles to be worn by both men and women(Pearson). Hairstyles changed over the years due to the value of self reflection in young adults and personal empowerment (Pearson). Men began to grow more facial hair including sideburns and beards. There was an abundance of new hairstyles such as the shag, feathered hair, the wedge, bangs, the pageboy haircut, and dreadlocks. Hair accessories were the most common, but necklaces were also often worn. Bandanas and colored hair clips were often seen being worn by women, but hats and tennis headbands were worn by males and females. Shoes were one of the most changed accessories of the 70s(Retrowaste). Sandals and boots had been around previously, but were changed to be more modern, but brand new styles such as platform shoes had just been introduced(Retrowaste). Women wore items like medallions, scarves, pearls, and chokers. Bags and purses were commonly worn mailman style and under the arm
The androgynous and bold styles of the time created a trademark image representing the 1970s. Though it is sometimes considered the worst time period for fashion in the America’s history, it created the iconic 70s style which can still be seen in the world
