Plot Summary: Although the novel and the movie were fictional, they were created in typical Tom Clancy-fashion to be as historically accurate and plausible as possible. It begins in 1984 with the voyage of the Soviet Typhoon-class nuclear submarine, the Red October. This submarine has a brand-new revolutionary technological upgrade that renders it undetectable to sonar. Commanded by the wise, old submarine veteran, Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), the Red October heads to sea on what is supposed to be an exercise. Immediately, the political officer, who is in charge of overseeing the submarine’s operations on behalf of the Communists, is mysteriously killed. Shortly afterwards, Captain Ramius turns the submarine towards the American east coast. His second-in-command, Executive Officer Vasily Borodin (Sam Neill), helps Captain Ramius with his plot. The cook attempts to detonate the submarine’s missiles before being shot by Ryan. The Konovalov fires a torpedo at the Red October, but the submarine cleverly outmaneuvers it. The torpedo then returns and hits the Konovalov, sinking it. This gave reason for the Soviets to believe that the Red October had been sunk by the Americans, though they still remained skeptical. Captain Ramius and Ryan then sail the Red October into a river in Main to be secretly handed over to the
