One of the main reasons why the ban was initiated was to get younger people to stop smoking. They wanted to see a decrease in smoking in the youth group because of the consequences smoking has on their health. Which brings up the second reason as to why the ban was put into effect. I’ve heard in some instances the government should protect the people but also protect the people from themselves. The government is right in asking the tobacco industry to ensure the warning label is made visible on the product packaging. However, as far as advertising is concerned, the government should not have a say in the matter. It really bothers me that there is a lot of stress put on the banning of advertising of a product, such as cigarettes, but not other good. For example, over time just like the use of tobacco, alcohol can cause health issues and sometimes even death. Yet, I see advertising for all types of liquor and beer on television, radio commercials, and even magazine and billboard ads. This kind of advertising is exposed to youths but I don’t see anyone making a big fuss about it. It really does blow my mind and everyone I have spoken to don’t have an answer for this issue either. In my opinion, the advertising of tobacco products is to make the brand of the product known to the consumer, not to promote the act of smoking or chewing tobacco. This is with any advertised product, not just tobacco
