To What Extent Is John Proctor Honorable In The Crucible

What does an honorable person look like, is John Proctor an honorable person? the answer is yes, John Proctor is a man that lived in the late 1600’s (137 Background) in a puritan community of Salem Massachusetts. During this time innocent people were being executed and put on trial for being witches. John Proctor is an honorable man because of what he believes in he is a good man and he doesn’t believe in witchcraft. John is honorable by the things he does such as; willing to die for his belief, and willing to blacken his name by confessing to the court.

John does this by being wary of signing a document that would have him commit to being a witch and also sell out his friend trade a life for a life. He signs the document but Danforth tells proctor he will nail it upon the church for everyone to see. John doesn’t want his name blackened, when asked why he responds by saying this “because it is my name! because i cannot have another in my life because i lie myself to lie and sign myself to lies. How may I live without my name?” (Page 211 line 725 to 730) John Proctor believes that without his good name the village of Salem will exile him and his family. there is also an argument to be made that John Proctor is not an honorable man. he has missed church many times and his excuse was that his wife was sick and he was busy plowing his farmland instead of going to church. he also forgot his ten commandments “thou shalt not commit adultery” which is the one that john committed with abigail. John also had an affair with abigail williams when she lived with him and his wife. and during act 3 he threatens Marry Warren into
