First, Jem’s bravery shows when he talks about going back to the Radley house to get his pants. Jem, Scout, and Dill had gone to the Radley house and when they ran away from it Jem’s pants got stuck and he had to leave them. Later that night Jem told Scout, “‘I’m goin’ after ‘em,’ he said. [...] Mr. Nathan had the other barrel waiting for the next sound he heard, be it nigger, dog … Jem knew that better than I” (74-75). The fact that Jem wants to go back to get his pants proves his bravery because he knows that Mr. Nathan would be waiting with his gun and if he makes even a slight noise Nathan may shoot his gunhe could be shot. Later in the novel, Jem shows his bravery when he tells Scout that he is not scared in order to keep her calm. Jem and Scout were walking home from Scout’s pageant when they realize that someone is following them. Scout asks Jem, “‘Jem, are you afraid?’ ‘No.’” (350). The fact that Jem tells Scout that he is not afraid proves that he is brave because he is saying what his sister wants to hear so that he can help her stay strong and not be scared. Jem also is shown as brave because he is trying to protect his sister by acting like he is not scared. Lee uses Jem’s speech to show that he is brave when he talks about going back to the Radley yard to get his pants and also when he tells Scout that he is not scared so that he can help her be brave
