Charles Baker Harris, or as he is more commonly known, Dill, is Rachel Haverford’s nephew, Jem’s best friend, and Scout’s “fiancé”. He comes to Maycomb from Meridian each summer and leaves each fall with a few million new tales of trouble. He is described by Scout as such, “his hair was snow white and stuck to his head like duckfluff; he was a year my senior but I towered over him… his blue eyes would lighten and darken; his laugh was sudden and happy; he habitually pulled at a cowlick in the center of his forehead” (Lee 7-8).…

Harper Lee, the acclaimed author of To Kill A Mockingbird, recounts the touching tale of a young child and her exposure to the disturbing and unsettling reality concerning her hometown of Maycomb, Alabama. Harper Lee’s use of diction, the manner in which something is expressed in words, while being reflective of the era and setting, imply a separation between formal and informal speech that is a representation of Scout’s developing intellect and the influence from her surroundings; the concept of like-mindedness and communal practices have been adopted by Scout. As Harper Lee describes the changes throughout the environment, Scout’s character is recognizably changing to match it accordingly. Scout’s perspectives develops from childlike, innocent,…

Harper Lee, in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), argues via the closing statement of Atticus Finch against the mistreatment of black people. In his closing argument, Atticus argues that the defendant, Tom Robinson, is innocent, and should not be so quickly accused or condemned simply because of the color of his skin. Lee supports her argument by illustrating that the townspeople's beliefs about black people are obviously false. The author's purpose is to show the immorality of the oppression of black people. The author writes in a formal tone, using Atticus's diction to make an emotional appeal to Maycomb county, and America by extension, that black people are no more criminal than white; that the prejudice against them besmirches the…

Dill is a mockingbird as, despite only ever wanting a caring family, he is made to feel abandoned. He expresses the impact of this feeling in his decision to run away from, what he describes as, a neglectful home. Stating that he left because he feels as if his parents “[don’t] want" or need "[him]” as they never spend time with him. In making him feel so “[unwanted]”, his parents, the very people meant to protect him, lead him to question his self-worth. That is, they make him question whether it is his fault that "they sta[y] gone”, or away from him, all the time".…

Jem and Scout were very acceptant of Dill when he comes to Maycomb that summer, and they quickly became best friends. They spend hours together playing. There are also more obvious ways of how these three kids are an example of how To Kill a Mockingbird is a love story. An example that is more obvious is when Dill and Scout promise each other that they will get married when they grow up (Lee, 54). Jem also shows that he cares by teaching Dill how to swim, and comforting Scout when she needed it.…
