Jem also absorbed the meaning behind the words that were said instead of letting them cross over his, unlike before. One prime example of this is when Mrs. Dubose immerses herself in conversing with Jem, saying, “You’ll pull it by the roots, won’t you?” Jem conveys great maturity through his response, “[Jem says] he certainly would.”, hence subliminally proving that his perspectives were in fact broadening. He could have stood there and argued with her, which would not have shown maturity because it would have exposed his childish ways, or he could have ignored her as well, however, that would not have been better either seeing as how that would have meant that Mrs. Dubose was getting to Jem and he did not have the knowledge of concealing his annoyance.
