In Chapter 15 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout’s compassionate actions eliminate the tension of the lynching mob. To do this, she started a conversation with Mr. Cunningham, the leader of the group. To begin, Scout recognizes Mr. Cunningham’s face, and begins to talk to him about the time he payed them in hickory nuts, trying to show what she learned from Atticus, which was to start a polite conversation with someone you know whenever you see them. She then follows this up by asking about his son, Walter Cunningham. She mentions she goes to school with him, and promises not to beat him up anymore. At this point, Mr. Cunningham is flustered.
