In and out of the fictional world bravery can take place and appear in many different forms. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird authored by Harper Lee and in the four articles, Things We Do For Love, The bravest thing you have ever done, The power of real girls, and finally Runaway slave on the Wisconsin-Canada line, the novel and articles alike all explain that a hero doesn’t have to be an almighty super hero, but an average mom or even a slave in earlier times. Though these articles aren’t directly connected with the story To Kill A Mockingbird all of these pieces show how bravery can come in an abundance of different forms such as, miniscule problems of everyday life, breaking out of social norm, sacrificing one's own health for another, and lastly risking everything in order to have a better life. Though Jem was relatively young, that didn’t necessarily stop him from doing what was right, this goes for show when Atticus get’s confronted by an angry gang that had the intention to, not only kill Tom Robinson, but Atticus as well. Jem seemed to pick up on the dangerous situation that was starting to unravel and continuously stuck his ground even when Atticus, his father who he respected dearly, ordered him to leave. As an example, “In the midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. 'I ain't going,' was his steady answer” (Lee __ ). Though Jem himself was scared he knew something was wrong and that if he and Scout left something bad would’ve happened, and knowing this he stayed despite his father’s protest. Jem would rather be scolded for the first time if it meant Atticus would be okay in the end. Not only does this show the abundance of bravery that Jem was but also the amount of love he holds for his loved ones. Along with Jem, Atticus dearly cares for his loved ones and the people of Maycomb county. Due to this factor, Atticus showcases a multitude of courageous events throughout the story. One, though seemingly miniscule, act of bravery is when Atticus protects the town from the rabid dog, Tim Johnson. Though it was obvious to everyone, besides Scout and Jem, Atticus didn’t feel like he could still take care of the rabid dog due to his old age. To put it lightly, Atticus was scared. He hasn’t picked up a gun in several years and now a whole town is depending on him and his shooting skills to take out a threat that could potentially terrorize their small town. After a lot of begging, Atticus finally takes the gun and …show more content…
