Raymond. Mr. Raymond is a wealthy white man who happens to be married to a black woman and generally does not associate with white people. The first thing people see about Mr. Raymond, no matter the time of day, is his brown paper bag with a bottle inside. One can only assume it is alcohol. “How can you stand to get drunk ‘fore eight in the morning?” (Harper Lee 211). Jem brings us a good point with this line. People are generally very judgmental of those who ingest that much alcohol, that early in the day. Therefore Mr. Raymond get a bad regard for his actions. The children later find out that what is is that bottle hidden by the brown paper bag is not what the people of Maycomb thought. “ Scout, it’s nothing but Coca-Cola” (Lee 267). After Dill, Scouts friend, is offered a sip of the mysterious drink he finds out it is just a soft drink. Why does he keep it in a paper bag? It gives him a reason to act the way he does. Boo Radley was the man that Scout was so engrossed with. He never came outside, did not associate with any of the neighbors, no one ever saw him. The children watched Boo very closely, but not to Scout’s knowledge, he took a liking towards them as well. He was leaving things in a tree by the road for them like gum and soap carvings. Boo Radley sincerely cared about these kids, he wanted to keep their walks home from school interesting and more importantly he wanted to keep them safe. After the Tom Robinson case Bob Ewell was irate about how Atticus tried to expose his secrets about beating his daughter Mayella. He swore to Atticus that he will take vengeance for Atticus trying to taint his name. Bob Ewell decided to take this out his anger on anger on Scout and Jem. When attempting to kill the children, Boo Radley was there to stop Ewell from his evil- doings. Scout was wearing a costume, for which she could not see out of it, had no idea what was happening. Jem, on the other hand, broke his arm and could not recollect what happened. All he knows is that he was carried away from the scene. Later Scout learned is was her neighbor Boo that saved them. Bob Ewell was later found with a knife stuck in between his ribs. The Sheriff is claiming that Bob fell on his knife and killed himself although Atticus thinks he is trying to cover up the fact that Jem killed him. But the sheriff knows it was Boo that pierced Bob’s abdomen.
