Timothy Island In John Steinbeck's The Cay

Decent Essays
At the beginning of The Cay, Phillip can be best described as confused when he wakes up on a raft with a black man named Timothy after the boat named S.S. Hato was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. After the crash Phillip is freaking out because he doesn't know where he or his mother is. Then, Philip becomes surprised and realizes that he was safe on the SS Hato and next thing you know he is knocked out and turns up on a raft with a big, black man.

Towards the middle of the book, Philip can likely be defined as uncooperative when he is trying to make palm mats for the shelter and he can't do it, so he gets mad at Timothy and calls him an ugly black man when all Timothy was trying to do was help him. After Philip figures out that Timothy was trying

“Timshel,” a Hebrew word meaning “thou mayest triumph over sin,” is representative of the idea that one has the power to choose right, wrong, and even change for the better after having made wrong choices. In Steinbeck’s East of Eden, the idea of “Timshel,” is exemplified through protagonist Cal Trask, who undergoes a crisis in which he must decide between remaining evil or changing for the better, a decision only he can make. Although present among each individual’s life, the idea of Timshel varies for everyone. Throughout the following two years, the concept of Timshel will be present in my academic and social lives, where I’ll need to make choices which will either allow me to approach or deviate from the pursuit of my goals, and will influence…

On the previous nights where Lennie and George slept, John Steinbeck continues to show a very peaceful mood by creating the setting down by the river where you can see the tranquil sunset. During this sunset, the air is calm with willow trees whose branches and leaves drift swiftly with the wind. The mountains in the background make graceful shadows over the sunset as you can see in the distance. Most importantly the sunset reflects on the Salinas River where Lennie and George can now see the warm colored sunset. Also from this, John Steinbeck says, “The flame of the sunset lifted from the mountaintops and dusk came into the valley, and a half darkness came in among the willows and the sycamores.…

In addition, if the road symbolizes the spiritual journey of the family and the path to freedom for the farmers, the migrants themselves are represented by the figure of the turtle. Although, novels tell stories that are not true, they can teach valuable lessons in life. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, there is insight into how the characters struggle to find their way while holding on to their personal dreams. Similiarly, in the article, “A Duty to Family, Heritage, and Country” by Ying Ying Yu, the author informs the reader of how Chinese students are held to very high standards, and there is only one dream, and that is to be successful in the eyes of their family and country. Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men and the article by Ying Ying Yu both demonstrate how one measures success by his or her own actions and consequences.…

In East of Eden, John Steinbeck communicates the reliance of the human soul on free will to establish itself, which proves to be true to an extent, but, considering a Christian worldview, other variables such as God’s image, original sin, and forgiveness influence the human soul’s construction. Steinbeck attempts the challenging task of exploring the enigmatic basis of humanity, ultimately reasoning the human soul requires free will in order to exist. While I argue that Steinbeck does not succeed in presenting the complete image of the human soul, he captures essential components of it through valid arguments concerning “original sin” in relation to free will. It is evident that Cathy’s bestial identity potentially resides within Cal.…

Strolling along Cannery Row in Monterey was a wondrous experience. I witnessed history brought to life. Over sixty years after the publishing of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, there have been many modern tourist attractions built, such as the Intercontinental Hotel, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Pinkberry. However, key historical landmarks mentioned in the novel still exist, such as Wing Chong’s grocery, La Ida’s cafe, Dora’s whorehouse, the Malloys’ boilers, the Palace Flophouse, Doc’s laboratory, and many colorful tide pools. Tide pools are inhabited by a variety of sea creatures, such as “crabs… starfish… mussels and limpets… orange and speckled and fluted nudibranches… snapping shrimps… hermit crabs……
