- 1750 Britain population was around 6 million, most lived in rural areas (it was a mainly agricultural society)
- most goods were produced in homes
- sources of power were limited to windmills, waterwheels and animals (horses and donkeys)
- crop failures or extreme weather could lead to starvation and suffering
- by 1850, a century had seen Britain’s population triple
- most people had moved from country towns and rural areas into cities and towns
- development in industry
