The reason I liked this line in the book was because it shows us how each experience in life can comfort us later in life. It also demonstrates how our memories help us to deal with tragic circumstances. I believe that the author is trying to compare one death to his own near death experience. It made me feel sad that the experiences as a soldier where so harsh that just to deal was a challenge. Telling the past made me, as the reader, be able to empathize with Tim. It also felt as though the sadness of Linda dying were minimized with Tim’s ability to relive the story.
Tim told the story of Linda wearing a red cap. “She (Linda) cried as the teacher helped to put the cap back on” pg 223, the presence of the red cap to me was a symbolization which was much bigger than the red cap. Linda was hiding something much like Tim himself. Tim tried to appear strong, confident, and fearless when in reality he was scared to death. The uniform of the soldier is much like the red cap Linda wore. When we see a soldier all dressed up we immediately think of the person as confident, strong, and determined. Underneath the uniform is a person, a person whom has feelings, worries, and opinions.
I find that this book, especially the last chapter, taught me not to take things at face value. I believe that I will be more cautious as to form an opinion based on just what the outer appearance is. In addition, it taught me that life is a copulation of events that continue to form and shape us to deal with challenges in the future. Each of these seamless events creates a stronger ability to deal with both the good and the bad adventures we
