What I find interesting about this movie is the mere fact it did not touch on the European witch trials, which preceded the Salem witch trials in an attempt tried to minimize the atrocities committed during the witch hunts. In the movie, Three Sovereigns for Sarah, the most contributing factors of the Salem Witch Trials were King James, lack of education, and lack or respect for women.
To put it briefly, the British senate passed a law that made witchcraft punishable by death in 1542. After this law was revoked, another law in 1562 was enacted. During this period there was no separation of church and state, therefore, religion became the law. Women who were accused of being witches were; miraculous healers, high or exceptionally low status, read books, questioned the Bible, wore/created make-up, envious neighbors, economic reasonings, past crimes, relativity, association with an accused witch, had no children, had too many children. Because women didn’t have the power they do today, they turned against one another, consequently giving them power over another’s life. Incidentally, women were treated as second class citizens, so it was easier to accuse them of witchcraft whether they were innocent or not. Unfortunately, children played a part in the witch trials as well by making accusations based off of their parents suggestions. People were able to get rid of villagers with whom they quarried with.
In my conclusion, there were various reasons why the Salem Witch Trials went the way they did and why Sarah had such a difficult time in Salem. In the end, we have to start at the origin and work our way to the end in order to find reasoning as to why it happened in the first place. This concludes my essay on Three Sovereigns for
